Celina, Ohio.  Mercer Sheriff Doug Timmerman reports his office is investigating a suicide attempt by an inmate in the adult detention center on this date June 15, 2026.  At 5:27 PM other inmates who were in the dorm with the victim notified staff of the inmate’s attempt.  Staff responded immediately and were in the dorm within 47 seconds after being notified.  The inmate had tied his sweatshirt around his neck and then tied it off to the railing on the second-floor mezzanine and then lowered himself down.  Several inmates assisted in holding the inmate up until staff could arrive.  The inmate was pulled back up onto the second floor where first aid was immediately rendered by staff, and the jail nurse on duty.  The inmate was transported to a local hospital for treatment and a mental health evaluation.

Preliminary investigation indicates staff complied with jail standards on inmate checks, and evidence collected shows the inmate had prior calculation to carry out the attempt.

Currently the inmate’s name is not being released.  Sheriff Timmerman would like to thank the numerous inmates who assisted and more than likely saved the inmate’s life with their quick actions.  Sheriff Timmerman also commends his jail staff for their quick actions and professionalism.

This incident remains under investigation and no other information will be released at this time.
