This is from the Greenville Fire Department…

The Greenville Fire Department is proud to announce that the city received its updated ISO (Insurance Services Office) rating. The city’s rating improved from a Class 4 to a Class 3 rating. The classification, known as the Public Protection Classification (PPC) program, assesses the fire-protection efforts and capabilities in a community based on several factors:

• Fire Department – 50% (apparatus & equipment, personnel, training, capabilities)

• Water Supply – 40% (hydrant availability, water flow capacity)

• Emergency Communications – 10% (dispatching capabilities, alarm handling)

Approximately 10% of all fire departments nationwide achieve an ISO Class 3 rating. Only about 15% earn a Class 3 designation or better (Classes 1, 2, and 3). The ISO rating, or Public Protection Classification (PPC), is a score from 1 (superior fire protection) to 10 (least effective protection). This rating is used by many insurance companies to help determine property insurance premiums. A better ISO rating (like Class 3) can lead to lower insurance premiums because insurers see a lower risk of significant fire loss.

Achieving a Class 3 rating is a significant accomplishment and indicates a high level of preparedness and effectiveness in the community’s fire protection system. The improved rating is a testament to the hard work and dedication of not only our firefighters, but also our Emergency Communication Operators (ECOs) and Water Plant personnel.

The Class 3 rating takes effect on February 1, 2026.
