At approximately 8:13 a.m. Wednesday morning, Union City Police Department officers were dispatched to the 1300 block of W. Hickory Street following reports of a school bus that had collided with a residential structure. When they arrived on the scene, officers discovered the driver, identified as 69-year-old Jacqueline Stump of Union City, Indiana, was trapped inside the bus.
The bus was occupied by around 20 students, all of whom were safely evacuated from the vehicle. Three students sustained minor injuries and were transported to a local hospital as a precaution. The driver was also transported to IU Ball Hospital in Muncie for further medical evaluation. Preliminary investigation indicates that a medical episode experienced by Ms. Stump was the likely cause of the crash.
The investigation remains ongoing, and additional information will be provided as it becomes available. The Union City Police Department extends their thoughts and prayers to all those affected by this incident. They also express gratitude to the Randolph County Sheriff’s Department and Randolph Eastern School Corporation Police Department for their prompt and professional assistance during this investigation.
